World Food Day 2022: History, Significance and Themes

|
World Food Day 2022

World Food Day is celebrated on October 16 every year. This day marks the founding date of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on the same day in 1945. The FAO is an international organisation that focuses on ending world hunger, increasing nutrition and improving food security.

Why is World Food Day celebrated?

World Food Day is celebrated to raise awareness on food-related issues such as world hunger, nutrition and healthy food habits for all. It is also the day when we celebrate the joy that food brings us and recognise how underprivileged suffer from hunger. To celebrate World Food Day, every year the FAO decides on a theme through which people from all over the world can cherish the taste of food and realise its importance.

Theme for World Food Day 2022: Leave No One Behind

This year the FAO recognises the ongoing pandemic, hiked prices and rising international tensions which are a risk to food security. To counter this, FAO urges the world to champion sustainability so that everyone has access to nutritious and healthy food, so that no one is left behind.

Sustainability is a shared global responsibility to avoid the depletion of Earth’s natural resources and make efforts to peacefully co-exist with nature without causing harm. Over the past few decades, sustainability has been identified to be the way to fight global warming and save our planet for future generations.

Sustainability and food

On World Food Day 2022, it is important to understand how we can be sustainable with our food. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to food sustainability:

  • To be more sustainable, it is necessary to choose ingredients and food products that have been manufactured or produced in a sustainable manner. This means that the products or items produced must not deplete or harm natural resources during their manufacturing.
  • Most local fruits and vegetables, and organic products are sustainable in nature. Aashirvaad Nature’s Super Foods Organic Range is a complete collection of staples like Arhar Dal, Moong Dal, Atta etc that are certified organic products. Using these along with organic oils, and local fruits and vegetables can help you become more sustainable and mindful.
  • Avoid processed foods and meat and consume more plants and plant-based foods. Processed foods require many additives which can be harmful to the environment and your body. Choosing safe, nutritious, and plant-based ingredients does not pollute the environment and keeps us nourished and healthy.

So, how can we celebrate World Food Day 2022?

  • Spread awareness of the importance of food and nutrition and highlight the alarming fact that many people in the world today do not have access to nutritious food
  • Inform others and practise sustainability in all aspects of life, especially with food
  • And lastly, cook up a storm with organic and sustainable ingredients to celebrate the indescribable joy that delicious food brings to our lives!

Happy World Food Day!
