Originating in South India, Murukku is very similar to “Chakali” which is more common in other parts of India. Essentially, both Murukku and Chakali are a fried flour-based snack that is recognized by its twisted shape. There are many different types of Murukku made with different flour combinations, and seasoned differently too.

This Wheat Murukku recipe makes use of AASHIRVAAD Atta, and it is seasoned with dry masalas to add flavour. A tight dough must be prepared in order to bring your homemade Wheat Murukku recipe to life. Just like the Chakali, making the special Wheat Murukku requires a Murukku maker. Ingredients:

  • Wheat Flour – 1 cup
  • Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  • White Sesame Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Butter (at room temperature) – 1/2 tsp
  • Hing – 1/8 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – to deep fry
  • Water – as required

How to make Wheat Wheat Murukku Recipe at Home?

  1. Measure wheat flour and transfer the flour to a clean white cloth. Bring the ends and tie a knot so that no moisture goes inside.
  2. Steam cook for at least 20 minutes. Can use Idli steamer with water underneath while placing the bag on Idiyappam plate.
  3. Keep covered with a lid and steam cook.
  4. After 20 minutes, let it cool down a bit. Once it’s warm enough to handle open the bag. Break the lumps with a spoon. Now sieve it, discard the coarse mixture
  5. Now take the flour in a mixing bowl along with red chilli powder, butter, hing, sesame seeds and required salt. Mix it well with your hands first.
  6. Now add water little by little to form a smooth non-sticky dough. You can see how clean it has come together as its non-sticky. Take your Murukku press and grease it well.
  7. Fill your Murukku press with the dough and start pressing into Murukku. You can press it in 2 ladles and flip it in oil. You can even press it directly into the oil.
  8. Deep fry till golden browned. Drain in tissue paper. Repeat the process until the entire dough finishes
